The Newark "Main Library" has a long and storied history dating back to the 1870's where it started in a house, but soon moved to the basement of the Licking County Courthouse.  The first official Newark Public Library opened in September of 1908 using one rent-free room in the Memorial Building.  In 1920, the library moved to the Hilliard House at 105 W. Church Street, back-to-back with Central High School. A new building opened in 1950 at 88 W. Church Street where it remained until voters passed a bond levy in 1997 to build what currently is the Main Library and the largest library in the Licking County Library System.
